In X-ray images, some point sources with high significance can be easily identified "by eye". However, to properly account for their broadening described with the PSF, and especially do detect faint sources, it is better to use automatic pipeline software. Such a pipeline for XMM-Newton Scientific Analysis System, edetect_chain, will make all the automatic procedure for point source detection.
The outputs of edetect_chain contain the FITS file with region coordinates, fluxes in different X-ray bands, and detection significances.
Important: due to automatic procedure, the final source lists usually contain several sources with idential parameters (e.g. source coordinates) which may significantly delay the procedure of subsequent spectral extraction (when analyzing the stacked source spectrum or the spectrum where all the point sources are removed). In this case, it is likely to filter out the identical sources e.g. with "sort -u" command.
