Variance of transmitted flux

The variance (or fluctuations) of transmitted flux in the Ly $\alpha$ -forest part of quasar spectra is defined by

$\delta F(\lambda )=\frac {F(\lambda )-\bar {F}(\lambda )}{\bar {F}},$

where $F(\lambda )$ is the observed flux on the wavelenghth $\lambda$ and $\bar {F}$ is its mean value (over some redshift bin) called mean transmitted flux.
