Forward shock in supernova is a (supersonic) shock wave that comes from originally exploded star. During the expansion through interstellar medium this wave grabs the matter and heats it from the temperature of ISM to the temperature of the shock (roughly keV range energies). This hot matter that passed through the shock forms hot gas region. See this link for different regions of SNR explanation.
